Premature
and naked
Man is born
unfinished to be delivered to the adventure of
completion. The unfinished man involves in his incompletion all on which
he carries his hand or puts his glance. He takes it in his project. He refuses
to nature the right to enclose itself in his completion. This refusal is also
called “culture”. It opens the new space of a possibility of infinite new
creation.
The authentic human
reality is in exodus. It occurs as if the evolutionary trials and errors were
feverishly searching for perfection and that finally, oh paradox, just the
extreme unfinished and premature weakness is delivered to a gaping
vertical chasm. And here it finds a `force' of another kind. Not in continuity but in
rupture. Through uncertainty and risk thus a space opens where the authentic
human condition can decide about itself.
The prosthesis of
premature man is called a tool in all the dimensions of the word and in
its broadest meaning.
The gaping human depth seeks to fill its lack by creating tools and
increasingly powerful tools. The large fragmented pebble is refined. The
relationship between edge and weight of materials does not cease increasing.
Deprived of its instinctive know-how, the intelligence must solve increasingly
complex problems. Hooks and traps compete with the defensive agility of nature.
The nudity of man must get dressed and for that it has to cut up, to scrape, to
prick. His weakness provokes him to become master of energies thanks to the
boosters, the harpoons, the arc and arrow, the domestication of the horse, the
harnessing. His fragility makes him build, dig, split, saw. Thanks to the
pottery, he accumulates and transports his vital reserves through space and
preserves them through time…
