Between
Alpha and Omega only
We
are embarked in the 'middle' of a History we live in, perpetually
unfinished and remaining perpetually open. We are not mains of the
future. Hardly we get the present. As for the past, it is never but
about a 'certain' past. The question of the sense of history and the
question of its goal remains forever out of our range. History
embarks man on the mad side. We
can
never totalize but between Alpha and Omega. As
large they may be, our systems are only floating 'bubbles' on a vast
gaping.
There is a sense however.
The impossibility of locking up the
totality of History in a system and, therefore, of assigning it an
'end', an ultimate stage, frees the way of searching for its
significance.
History cannot be an 'object' of comprehension because it is
primarily a 'subject' of decision. The gaping of History is chance
for the basic essentials of man exposed to freedom. It is not History
that leads man, it is man who tries to lead History. There is
revealed a very major sense of the human condition called for being
beyond and going ahead. A being on the way. Not on a nice road traced
in advance but simply marked out by the major options depending on a
faith.
Through
uncertainty
and risk...
The uncertainty and the risk of the historical adventure is the
privileged dimension of freedom
and the urgency of decision.
The opening of a 'not-still-decided' future provokes an existential
decision. Nothing is never played. Every thing has to be played. In
the infinity of adventure. The great human risk to be taken…
History
is yet only an unimportant series of factual events before an act
of meaning gives it sense and assumes
it in a project of significance. The act
which thus opens history and confers it its dynamics is dialectical.
Man
will without doubt never come to terms with the
total comprehension of history. It is however possible to discover a
key giving
access to its intelligence. Not a solidifying structure but just a
key. Not an answer allowing the construction of a system but a
question which engages on the infinite way of a reflection. Not a
diagram claiming the control of a diachronic totality starting from a
synchronic structure of history but a scheme of the decisive
topicality of the historic decision.
As
an essential dimension of human reality, History
starts like mankind itself with a no.
So can difference be and also the overtaking of difference. Dialectical
motion. Historical dynamics.
